Autodesk recently published the 2025 editions of their products. Most notably this time, with the exception of 3ds Max 2025, is that the file numbered 001_002 is a short .exe file, while the file numbered 002_002 is a complete 7-Zip archive.

This is both a blessing and a curse. A blessing in the sense that we can now easily extract each distribution with our favorite tools, and a curse in the sense there are no indicators of the different file extensions when downloading the files. Maybe my ad and popup blockers were to blame.

3ds Max 2025 still follows the old naming scheme, with file sizes up to 2 GiB – 1 byte.

  • Autodesk_3ds_Max_2025__EFGJKPS_Win_64bit_001_003.sfx.exe (2 115 406 368 bytes)
  • Autodesk_3ds_Max_2025__EFGJKPS_Win_64bit_002_003.sfx.exe (2 115 406 368 bytes)
  • Autodesk_3ds_Max_2025__EFGJKPS_Win_64bit_003_003.sfx.exe (902 867 344 bytes)

AutoCAD 2025 and Revit 2025, as two examples, follows the new naming scheme where the 7-Zip archive can exceed 2 GiB in size.

  • AutoCAD_2025_English_Win_64bit_db_001_002.exe (14 948 528 bytes)
  • AutoCAD_2025_English_Win_64bit_db_002_002.7z (2 807 753 496 bytes)
  • Revit_2025_English_Win_64bit_dlm_001_002.exe (14 774 696 bytes)
  • Revit_2025_English_Win_64bit_dlm_002_002.7z (11 085 789 506 bytes)

If you run the .exe file, the extracted files wind up in subdirectories of C:\Autodesk\WI. Unlike the previous versions, we are no longer asked where to extract the distributions. Instead we are asked if we want to browse the newly created directory structure or run setup.exe.

Civil 3D 2025 got a hotfix named C3D_2025_0_1_Update.exe which addresses issues with large surfaces with external MMS or GRS files, where Civil 3D shuts down unexpectedly when either promoting the surface or creating a snapshot of the surface and then undoing the operation. (Source.) From the release notes: “The installer extraction dialog displays illegible characters. The button displayed cancels the extraction.” It’s hillarious.
